Will Diego Luna return to dance? 20 May 2007 El Universal Mexico City – It seems that the next cinematographic adventure of Mexican actor Diego Luna will be the film adaptation of the book The Dance of Victory, originally by Chilean writer Antonio Skármeta. But while the writer confirmed it on Friday in Rome, Italy, the Spanish producer Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque), who would be in charge of directing, proved to be cautious. “I would like much to direct it”, he said plainly. I like it. Diego is an intelligent boy that knows what he’s doing. I was surprised there was not a work like the one I saw,” he explained. The Dance of Victory, whose cinematographic adaptation was carried out between Trueba and Skármeta, starts when two prisoners are set free. The young Ángel Santiago and Nicolás Vergara Grey, both convicted of the crime of robbery, leave the area; but another is released too, who has the objective of assasinating one of the previous. On Friday Skármeta affirmed in a press conference that the protagonists of the story will be Luna and the Argentine actor Ricardo Darín (El hijo de la novia y El aura). But Trueba limited himself speaking of how to make a film version of a novel. “Adapting a book to cinema is even easier than the original. When one makes an adaptation faithfully or freely, one is starting off with something that pleases and that’s a movie you feel like doing. Writing is re-writing for a poet, a journalist, for a scriptwriter, the first raises the difficluty and it’s necessary to come to the first version and start to correct it there, to motivate it. There is where it really begins,” he considered. In the event of Luna coming true, it would not be the first time that Trueba has worked with a Mexican. He did already with art director Salvador Parra (Volver) in El Embrujo de Shaghai in 2002. The Spanish film maker is said to be a friend of his Mexican colleauges Guillermo del Toro (El Laberinto del Fauno); Alfonso Cuarón (Y tu Mamá También) and Arturo Ripstein (Así es la Vida). “I think that the whole Latin-American community is separated artificially by a series of stupidities that are borders. We have differences, but also loads of things that we share. The proof is that we make friends of one another. I have directors, scriptwriters, who when they go to Spain are going to see me and the other way round,” he said. Pero mientras el literato lo confirmó el viernes en Roma, Italia, el realizador español Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque), quien sería el responsable de la dirección, se mostró cauto. “Me gustaría mucho dirigirlo”, dijo escuetamente. Lo que sí aceptó es el inicio de rodaje a fines de septiembre y ser admirador del trabajo de Luna, ahora que se estrenó como director del documental “JC Chávez”, sobre el ex campeón mundial de boxeo. “Parece una cinta de ficción, de esas películas estadounidenses sobre boxeadores fracasados, de leyendas caídas, de cómo uno se viene abajo y lucha por la supervivencia. Me gustó, Diego es un chico inteligente que sabe lo que hace, me hubiera sorprendido si no hubiera un trabajo como el que vi”, explicó. El Baile de la Victoria, cuya adaptación cinematográfica se realizó entre Trueba y Skármeta, inicia cuando dos presos son puestos en libertad. El joven Ángel Santiago y Nicolás Vergara Grey, condenados ambos por el delito de robo, abandonan el recinto; pero también es soltado otro más, que tiene como objetivo asesinar a uno de los anteriores. El viernes Skármeta afirmó en conferencia de prensa que los protagonistas de la historia serían Luna y el actor argentino Ricardo Darín (El hijo de la novia y El aura). Pero Trueba se limitó a hablar de cómo hacer una versión fílmica de una novela. “Adaptar un libro a cine resulta hasta más fácil que uno original. Cuando se hace una adaptación fiel o libre, se está partiendo de algo que gusta y que es una película que te apetece hacer. Escribir es reescribir para un poeta, un periodista, para un guionista, uno primero se sube a la montaña y hay que llegar a una primera versión y ahí comienzan a tacharlo, a motivarlo, ahí es donde realmente comienza”, consideró. En caso de concretarse lo de Luna, no sería la primera vez que Trueba trabajara con un mexicano. Ya lo hizo con el director de arte Salvador Parra (Volver) en El Embrujo de Shaghai en 2002. El cineasta español dijo ser amigo de sus colegas mexicanos Guillermo del Toro (El Laberinto del Fauno); Alfonso Cuarón (Y tu Mamá También) y Arturo Ripstein (Así es la Vida). “Creo que toda la comunidad latinoamericana está artificialmente separada por una serie de estupideces que son las fronteras. Tenemos diferencias, pero también un montón de cosas que compartimos.
