“It is a move that we were trying to carry out now, but it’s not going to be done so that I have time to have some vacation,” he commented without giving major details.
Via telephone from San Francisco, hours before receiving the Moctezuma Award on the grounds of the Castro theatre, Luna remembers that he was never a star child and on the other hand a lazybones.
There are those who say that when recognition comes it is because they have already died... do you not feel strange on having received them?
“More than strange, a pleasant surprise, but I believe that these types of things, of recognition, as they want to call it, must come in these times and not when you are 70 years old and not producing anymore. This is a pure gasoline to continue and it should always be this way. On the other hand, we actors always have very long careers, we never finish, only the drive to do it comes to an end,” he indicated.
Remembering your childhood, were you a star pupil?
“No, of course not! A few teachers liked me, but not for my dedication. In fact, school was a stage, the day was made up as the afternoon happened and I was going away to the theater to do the really entertaining thing.
“School was always hard work for me. I had to convince many, many teachers what I was doing. Subjects that were entertaining I did well in, but I’ve always been lazy and if I am not amusing myself, I don’t do my best,” he said.
Where do you keep your awards?
“The year of Y tu mamá también, (Gael García and I) shared many awards: especially in Venice and Chile they did not have two statuettes but one. They always promised us a second and it never came, so I kept the Mastroiani and Gael took the Oso de Valdivia.
“I give the awards to my
dad. I think they give him more excitement and he keeps them in his
house. I believe they are in good hands… I had lost them in some
move! It is easier to have the awards of others. I have those of my
dad and he has mine.”
“I’ve realized that the street autograph does not necessarily mean that people have gone to see your movie. There is no experience nicer that to come to a festival room where your movie screens and chat with the public. It is the most fulfilling process and from that you learn more; it influences you (the communication with the public) for your next work.”
Are there plans to exhibit JC Chávez commercially in a boxing country like the United States?
“There are conversations, but there is no date yet. It’s necessary for us to roll a little bit with the movie. We are going to Greece at the start of the year, thus I need a little trip in the middle of the year.”
