Rudo y Cursi Press Conference in Morelia l 18 October 2008 |
| I'll preface this
article by saying a few things. First, being 30 minutes late in Mexico
is no big deal. I doubt that it was intentional. As portrayed in the
film Nicotina, Mexicans are notorious for being late. Secondly,
throwing flowers and laughing shows that the men were comfortable with
each other and those at the festival. They were probably just in a good
mood. The people who were allegedly put-off by this behavior are too up
tight. Lastly, I find it rather refreshing that the press felt insulted
for a change, since they are usually the ones doing the insulting.
Ain't karma a bitch?!!! |

The irreverent attitude of the film makers Alfonso and Carlos Cuarón, as well as of Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal provoked the annoyance of some journalists during the advanced screening of the movie Rudo y Cursi (Rough and Corny).
After arriving 30 minutes late, the actors and producers spent it playing and throwing flowers, in addition to constantly showing off this sense of "brotherhood", which they said had joined them from making Y Tu Mamá También. Some of the reporters who were at the conference in order to learn the details of the movie directed by Carlos Cuarón and led by Luna and García, must have put up with the scene.
Alfonso, Carlos, Diego and Gael were unrecognizable; one was interrupting the other before the astonished look of Daniela Michel and Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Batel, director and honorary vice-president of the International Film Festival of Morelia respectively. At the moment when the artists tried to involve Daniela and Cuauhtémoc, they disassociated themselves diplomatically and avoided turning themselves into their guest's accomplices.
The protagonists of the conference showed a different attitude from what they expressed in the morning, when very serious and formal they announced the particulars of Ambulant 2009, in an act in which their speech was really informative and substantial.
The situation came to such a degree that for a moment there were those who doubted the reasons that motivated them to film the story; like when Alfonso told the anecdote that supposedly inspired Carlos to write it. Alfonso reported that as Carlos didn't know the San Luis Potos desert they decided to travel to, but starting there he asked him where the dunes were and undertaking the trip up to Chihuahua, and from there to Caborca, Sonora, and the long journey that finally ended in Cañón del Colorado.
“Carlos took his trousers, a light weight jacket and a hat, at a certain moment a few young people who were there saw him and while one was talking about the route in a rough (rudo) manner, the other said the contrary, it was turning out to be quite corny (cursi). The idea was born to Carlos there.”
At another time Alfonso mentioned that originally the name of the movie character was “Tato”, who was split in two, but in the end they turned into two [characters], one Rudo (rough) and the other Cursi (corny), “the movie has diverse readings, the same way we see Carlos is rude and corny at the same time.”
For his part, Gael joked about how in the movie he must play the accordion. He practiced close to two months which lead to some of his neighbors being bothered by him. He added that he agreed to sing due to the requirements of the script in order to make a video-clip where he appears playing in a musical group and dressed in the style of Los Tigres del Norte. He emphasized that he was inspired by Julio Preciado, the ex-vocalist of La Banda El Recodo.
Luna pointed out that to play Rudo, he did
a combination between Jesús Ochoa and Alfonso Cuarón, imitating the
first when he answers the phone and the second stuttering whenever he
gets angry. Luna expressed that the subject of football [soccer]
remained discarded as an essential part of the cinematographic story.
The first one of them dreams of being an
idol of las chanchas [the townspeople/farmers?], while the other
desires to be a famous singer. They also share the desire to buy a house
for their mother, Dolores Heredia. One day they are discovered by a
head-hunter, Tato is the first to emigrate and score for the Deportivo
Amaranto team, but due to his style of playing they nickname him Cursi
(Corny).
