Diego Luna: Here and Now

Whenever I interview a person who enjoys certain popularity and
comment on it with some friend, there exists a question that
precedes telling the lived experience... “How is the guy (or
woman)?” Before this constant, nevertheless, this occasion is
different. Diego Luna is a perfectly centered, simple guy, with
his feet on the ground. Conscious that his search as actor is
just beginning, the protagonist of Y tu mama también was
emphatic in his passion for football, reading and the fine arts.
What is the movie that every human being must see?
Diego: To mention one is a compromise. Besides it would be bad
to leave out one of my favorite movies, like saying, what is the
perfect woman? It does not exist. Nevertheless, I recommend
seeing The Godfather, The 400 Blows and any by the Cohen
brothers.
Would you recommend a disc to make love?
Diego: It depends on the mood and the girl. I would say My
Funny Valentine and Brazilian music is good.
What skill or talent would you like to have?
Diego: To paint. I’d like to capture things that I like.
Who are your favorite painters?
Diego: Classics like Matisse, Picasso and Rubens. Nowadays I
suffer very much in the museums of contemporary art, because I
wonder if what I see must be in a museum. It is not the same
when you see a Picasso. You do not question it. You only
appreciate it.
What is your favorite word?
Diego: Between chido (cool!) and chingón (a
tougher connotation of cool!).
In what movies do you wish you’d acted in?
Diego: The Godfather.
What is your favorite caricature?
Diego: Don Gato and The Simpsons.
Who is better, Pelé o Maradona?
Diego: Maradona. Diego [Maradona] is more human. He makes more
errors. I also had the opportunity to see him play. I loved when
he welcomed the reporters with shots outside of his house.
If you could change something about yourself, what would be?
Diego: I would change my whole
physique.
Since this one, (referring to his body) I already know and use.
What period of history would you have liked to live in?
Diego: One where people were still getting excited. When
inventions were still surprising. When cinema was invented.
What thrills or inspires you?
D: Telling stories.
What discourages you?
D: The Mexican
“cangrejismo” (big cancer?)
and seeing how this country falls behind.
Who is the person that you hate most? (alive or dead)
Diego : History has taken charge of having many. I would say
Hitler, but every country has its tyrants, and each time there
exist more people who wants to "lower" the position.
Who are your favorite writers?
Diego : As cinema scriptwriters, I like the Cohen brothers and
Cuarón. As authors, Paul Auster and George Bataille.
What activity or discipline would you NOT like to take part in?
Diego: Modeling. To be a model is something that scares me a
lot.
What person in history would you like to interview?
Diego: Diego Rivera and Fidel Castro, but at the beginning of
the Cuban revolution.
Who is your favorite hero?
Diego: Benito Bodoque, although he is not a superhero, hopefully
outside. And Spiderman, too.
If they granted you a wish, what you would ask?
Diego: To be in love without the problems it brings.
What is your motto in life?
Diego: If you do not enjoy what you do, something is wrong.
Nothing has to hurt.
What do you value most abut your friends?
Diego: There is a phrase by David Trueba that says, “I don’t
tell my troubles to my friends, it entertains the sons of
bitches.” The coolest thing about friends is that they always
tell you the truth and know what hurts you. Therefore, you are
vulnerable with them and this is a great sensation.
What has been your biggest achievement?
Diego: Everything that’s happening with my life at this time. I
believe one has to overcome a lot, what I imagined. I am short a
mother.
What is your biggest fear?
Diego: To lose the people that I love without before having
shown it.
What animal or person would you like to be reincarnated as?
Diego: As Diego Armando Maradona in order to correct some
situations and to quiet the mouths of the people that he
couldn’t.
What is your biggest regret?
Diego: I try not to regret anything. I believe it’s the worst
thing you can do. Past situations are those that make you be in
the present. To regret the past is to be in non-conformance with
what you are in the present.
If you were a politician in Mexico, of what party would you be?
Diego: To be a politician here is the worst decision one can
make. Better, I would create a party.
What would be your motto?
Diego: The truth is cool, but unattainable.
What sensation must all human beings live through or experiment?
Diego: Surprise. If you lose this ability you become robotic.
What other profession would you like to practice?
Diego: Football [soccer], but I am already very big on trying
it. I saw World Cup alone in Canada without my friends. There I
realized that football is an important thing for me.
If you were a football trainer, how you would raise your team?
Diego: Completely offensive. I’d play 3-5-2; a goalkeeper, 3
defenders, 5 midfielders and 2 forwards.
What is life?
Diego: It is a journey with constant losses.
How would you like to die?
Diego: With a smile and knowing that I always did what I wanted.
How would you define yourself in a word?
Diego: Don’t mess with me.
