Viktor Navorski flys to New York from Eastern Europe. While en route, his homeland erupts in a coup. Stranded at Kennedy Airport with a passport from nowhere, he's not allowed to enter the U.S. and must spend his days and nights in the terminal’s international transit lounge until the war at home is over. As months stretch by, Viktor befriends airport employees and finds romance with a beautiful flight attendant. But Viktor has worn out his welcome with airport official Dixon, who considers him a bureaucratic glitch, a problem he wants desperately to erase.
