Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna and Simon Bross will support the
promotion of human rights through movies, and then join the jury of the
first cineminutos contest, One Minute for Human Rights.
The premiere, which will begin tomorrow (July 25, 2008), will invite
people of all ages to exhibit any of the 30 articles of the Universal
Declaration in a one minute video, which celebrates its 60th anniversary
in December.
"The competition is not necessarily the goal of being a sequence of
human tragedies. The idea is to recognize that there are many problems,
but also look at it as an opportunity for us to strengthen," said
Liliana Valiña yesterday in a press conference, a represent in Mexico,
High Commissioner of the United Nations for Human Rights.
One Minute ... emerged in March last year, when Diego and Gael expressed
their concern about the ignorance of this resolution adopted by the
United Nations, said Ambulante director, Elena Fortes.
For Emilio Alvarez Icaza, capital Ombudsman, who is also part of the
jury, this contest reiterates the importance that cinema has
historically been able to raise awareness about human rights. "The films
have an enormous capacity not only to advertise but also to denounce,"
he said.
The video winner, which will be announced on October 27, will be
projected in 100 theatres in Cinépolis City in 35 mm; and will also be
part of the Ambulante Film Festival.
Although there will be an economic incentive, because the best video
will receive an Xbox 360 and the second, a camera; Laris Lorena Guillen,
director of the Cinépolis foundation, said that the primary intention of
competition is to promote the work of new directors .
"More than awards, we are promoting creativity and innovation of many
young people, a lot of people who found interest in human rights and
cinema," she said.
