Diego Luna “What I like least about my work is fame”

At 27 years old he is one of the biggest talents of the national cinema. In a few days he will return to theatres with his new film El búfalo de la noche (The Night
Buffalo). In the movie, directed by Jorge Hernández and produced by Guillermo Arriaga, he shares credits with Camila Sodi, his girlfriend for a little more than three months. Jealous of his privacy, he swears that he’s already learned to fight with fame and confesses, “In areas of the heart I am very well and happy.”

Definitely, Diego is an attractive person. And that seems to be the only word (in addition to nice and talented, of course) that defines this young actor. He took a break from shooting the film Rudo y cursi to be in this photo session which was carried out on a Sunday at 8 AM in the Chopo de la Colonia Santa María La Ribera baths. He came aboard his van, always in a cheerful mood and accompanied by his girlfriend, Camila Sodi. From the beginning he was very ready, and concerned because everything was coming out perfectly. During the more than 4 hours that the shoot lasted, Diego and Camila did not hide the good chemistry that exists between them. It seems that his relationship paints something lasting...

She did not stop spoiling him, and while Luna was posing opposite the camera, she ran to bring him a few pieces of bread and an expresso with milk. Without shyness, Camila confessed that she is living through one of the fullest and happiest moments of her life. It is necessary to clarify here that Diego and Camila have been going togerher for three months, that paparazzi discovered them having dinner in a Polanco restaurant, although their first appearance in public was during the Cannes Film Festival, where the actor came to present the film Mister Lonely. But then, there in France, for the press they were still “nothing more than freinds”. Then, during the interview, Diego Luna, jealous of his intimacy, will say that he is very happy “with matters of the heart”. Also, he will speak about his priorities in life and reveal his film projects as an actor and director.

Does one find the heart of Diego Luna well at this time?

Yes, in these areas I am very well and happy.

How is your relationship with Camila going?

I have never liked taling about these topics and less when they have a name and are public people. I can tell you that I am very satisfied with life in general. I am happy to live in Mexico and with what I’m doing. I am passing through a good stage in every respect.

At some time have you thought about leaving Mexico?

No, I have many reasons to stay here. In this country I have my home, my company and this is the place where I am laying down roots [bulding a family]. It’s a fact that I’ll keep on traveling and spend time away. Still, I’ll always have a foot in this country because it is better here, where I am.

What does Diego expect in life?

To live from my work, to do what I like, to be close to the people that I love, to see my friends and all the people that are important to me. I am very interested in being recognized for my work and otherwise, otherwise nothing serves me. I am not interested that they recognize me regarding other questions or matters.

At some time have you taken a friendship with half truths, like in the movie your character Manuel takes it with Gregorio?

I have always been very careful in my friendships; with my friends I have gone so far as to do big things that join us, we have made movies. In the case of Manuel and Gregorio, the friendship that they have is full of lies; I am not like that with my friends, even with love relationships. That thing about half truths or the absence of honesty always brings consequences and that is necessary to correspond with what one thinks. My relationships with friends are different.

What does The Night Buffalo have of Diego Luna?

This movie cost me a lot of work to make, it was very wearing. The characer was too demanding of me, but simultaneously I was demanding of myself. At the end of filming, I finished very physically tired, but especially emotionally. Manuel is a character who is very alone and in this process I decided to put myself in his shoes: I changed all my habits, I got really thin, I subjected myself to a diet, I became more solitary than I am. All this served me to understand the character more. When we stopped filming I considered myself a victim of The Night Buffalo.

During this process did you find anything that you were ignorant of?

I found a level of rigor in the work that I was already finding a little demanding. I discovered again this passion that I was losing for my career and I understood that I must always surrender to the projects, because not doing so isn’t funny. This film allowed me to find meaning in my career as an actor, the same that I was already losing for reasons of weariness. It is always difficult to go on from one project to another without resting. I believe that I wasn’t giving my maximum anymore.

Do you think that your work as actor has stagnated?

More than stagnated, I feel that it was tiring. The truth is that I work a lot, and suddenly skipping from one project to another without a lot of time makes you doubt what you are doing and if you are doing it well. All of a sudden I don’t have time to see and analyze what I’m doing; to know that if something is bad I have to change it. I believe that there were moments in which I felt that I was losing the focus of my career. The rigor that I put into this movie was very important. And now seeing the film I can tell you that I am very proud of what I did. This work gave me back the meaning and the desires of continuing in this.

How do you handle this matter of fame?

I believe one has to see how you are as a person. For me, I like making cinema because I like telling stories. I love my work and the magic that is created around all this. I think that fame hit me when I was 16 years old. Yes, there it became a bore, but with time I understood that of what I do, the least thing that I like is fame. The best thing about this work is that people see your movies and not judge you for your actions or talk about your love affairs.

We have already seen a lot of you acting. You have your production company and you already proved the facet of director. What more is there still to see of Diego?

I don’t know. I can say hat I want to direct again and I hope that it’s not in the very distant future. Directing was a pleasant experience and I lived through very nice sensations. What I need is to find the story again. Being in this career has made me realize that things happen little by little and it’s not necessary to rush. You must always have the conviction where you want to be, because life comes to an end.

What was your dad’s opinion after seeing the movie?

My dad saw the movie at the Sundance Festival, he liked it very much. My dad is a person that has always been very much interested in my work. He supports me and accompanies me. In this sense, I feel very fortunate.

How do you think the public is going to receive this movie?

I try not to think about this part because that is unpredictable and when you make cinema, you don’t do it thinking that it will be a success or not. You do it because you believe in this project. I believe it has to do more with the reason you accepted the project and what you want to achieve.

There are few people who can understand the cinema like you. Does it worry you that people could see the film only for the nudity or the sex scenes?

The motives for which people go to see the movie don’t matter, as long as they see it everything is well. At the end of the movie the public will be able to hate it or to love it.

Clearly one always looks that the story is good and captures them. I am not going to deny that in the movie there is a lot of sex, and I wouldn’t like it to emphasize this sexual load because I feel that it has other things. Nevertheless, this can’t be avoided either. I believe that El búfalo de la noche is worth while for telling a serious story, and that is special, seeing as you haven’t seen anything similar.

What experience allowed to you to work with new people?

It is always interesting to share a film with young people, in general there is a lot of energy, in addition to that, youth has to do with desires. One is always grateful to see new faces while shooting, it’s a part of an experience in which you always end up learning.

Did you give any advice to these new kids?

Such as suggestions, no. Still, you always exchange comments or experiences. What I can tell you is that it was a big team. During the filming we all understood that The Buffalo... was more than a move, and that the nude or the sex scenes were the least, since the important thing was to manage to transmit the message wanted in the film.

Is there some anecdote that you remember?

Everything happened in this movie; actually we all were very vulnerable. In my case, any thing could destroy me. I remember that during the shooting a theatre director friend of the family died and this was one of the things that hit me most. I took it very badly. It was terrible that between shots I was going to my dressing room and I couldn’t stop crying. But there were also good things and happy moments. One of them was when they dressed me in the part of a prep student. They all died of laughter seeing me come out of my dressing room turned into a young guy. It was an intense shooting in that unexpectedly there were these pleasant moments that gave a breather to this.

How goes the filming of Rudo y Cursi?

I am shooting this movie now, it’s still missing a little. In a few days comes the premiere of El búfalo de la noche and, hence, I do not have anything planned...
